This Weekend I had some Friends of Mine from MN come out to do some Great Lake of the Woods Ice Fishing. We spent our first two hours that morning in search of the Whitefish Bay Lake Trout. There was a ton of bait fish moving through the water column underneath us and then the Trout began to move in. Good Friend and FLW Walleye tour 2009 Championship Winner Scott Steil’s was the first to hook into one. The Fish gave a really good fight but was soon through the ice for a couple pictures and then back to the depths. The fish weighed in just over eight lbs, and would had been great for the smoker but this weekend was about pictures and fun with good friends. There was one more hook up, but we lost it and then we decided to move on to try our luck on some Slab Crappies. After a fifteen minute snowmobile ride and a short portage through the beautiful snow covered pines we were set up for some slabs. The bite was on as soon as we got there, but was quick to shut off after landing eight or nine 12 to 13 Crappies. The school had most likely moved down the shore following the bait fish but we had plans of covering many species that day so we checked one more Crappie spot and were unsuccessful so it was off for an evening Walleye Bite. As we spread out across forty foot shelf the wind had dropped off and it was turning out to be a wonderful night. At first the Frabill set up on the deep edge were hooking in to Walleye after Walleye with an occasional Jumbo Perch. But it was only a short wait before Myself and friend Greg Marino (Professional Guide, Moosehorn Lodge Lac Seul ON) were getting bite after bite. I was jigging a Northland Buckshot Rattle Spoon tipped with a minnow head while Greg was jigging a Rapala Jigging Rap. We weren’t able to sink our hooks into any monsters but had more then enough for a feed of Walleyes for Dinner, with a bonus of Jumbo Perch. Saturday morning we were up and ready early as we had a Lake Trout Tournament on Regina Bay in Sioux Narrows ON. Steil’s was the first to hook up that morning with a 9.9lbs Laker, with Marino soon to follow with his second place fish at 17.5 lbs. With a couple quick changes on fishing spots we were able to locate a few more fish with friends Noah and Greg landing two almost identical 16 lbs Lakers. 67 people fished the tourney and we were able to take 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 10th, I would say that is a success!! The Winner, Brad Godin, weighed in a 23lbs Lake Trout. If anyone feels like getting out to do some Winter Lake of the Woods fishing please feel free to contact us at www.crawfordscamp.com, or Crawford@kmts.ca
